The Stories of our Elders

In the Fall of 2022, students from True Kids 1 embarked on a new project: to document The Stories of our Elders. We’ve now completed two such stories, with several more planned. The idea is simple and powered by culture. For our Hispanic elders, we’ve brought a film crew of Hispanic students, so that the elder can connect with and speak to the children of her culture in this dynamic act of knowledge transfer. We’ll soon bring a crew of Pueblo students to record the stories of Pueblo elders… stay tuned!

MAKE A DONATION NOW

Thank you for your support.

Yes! I want to make a tax-deductible contribution to support the AMAZING programs of True Kids 1.

Where do you and your friends get together? This could be a restaurant, a park, a secret spot, a parking lot, a forest or mountain top… Shoot a video to explain why you go there and what makes that spot unique. Take some photos of your place. Draw and animate it.

On Wednesday, May 28 2025, we’ll stage our annual event marking the end of another school year at the TCA. Called Where We Gather, we’ll showcase short video, photographs, animation and more, with students from across Taos County submitting entries showing the places where they gather.

We’ll award cash prizes to the best entries, ranging from $50 to $500.

Video Guidelines:

  • Successful ingredients you might include: you yourself going on screen, 2-3 people to interview, and some great b-roll (images) to illustrate your story.
  • As best you can, use a tripod, a hand-held, shotgun or lavalier (clip-on) microphone, and lights. We reserve the right to reject videos not meeting certain quality standards.
  • 5 minutes and shorter is preferred. 10 minutes is the max length we’ll consider.
  • Must be submitted to TK1 by Wednesday, May 21, 2025 at 5pm.
  • Use our amazing instructors to help you with your story design, with equipment for shorts, and for feedback on initial drafts. This makes a huge difference!
  • Shoot in at least 1080p resolution. While preferred, 4K resolution will make your raw files larger, so ensure you have the computer capacity before shooting in 4K.
  • If using your mobile phone to record video: shoot in landscape (horizontal) mode and do your best to ensure camera stability. Use a separate smartphone mic if possible.

Photography & Animation Guidelines:

  • Consider submitting a series of photos, up to 10 in total.
  • Animations should be short and exported in at least 1080p resolution.
  • Use Blender to create a simple animated character and/or gathering space.
